Hey there, hi there, ho there! My name is Julia, and I’m a twenty-something Princess living in New Jersey and working in New York City. But there’s nowhere I’d rather be than a Disney park.
So, being that I live 1,100 miles from Walt Disney World (Florida) and 2,800 miles from Disneyland (California), I do whatever I can to create Disney magic in my little corner of the northeast:
My writing rituals involve wearing Minnie ear headbands and listening to Disney score music.
I keep an emergency tiara at my boyfriend’s place in his dresser drawer (just in case.)
I take walks to the Disney Store in Times Square whenever I need to de-stress.
Half of my wardrobe is Disney, and the other half is filled with pieces for Disneybounding.
I make guides, lists, and spreadsheets before each and every visit to a Disney park.
And literally whenever someone I deem an “outsider” to Disney culture tells me they’re visiting a Disney park, I aggressively offer to help them plan EVERYTHING. 😆
Why does Disney mean so much to me, you ask?
Disney is known for teaching people of all ages to dream big and not to give up on their goals. Listening to words of wisdom belted out in song by Moana, Cinderella, and Hercules (among others) have guided me on a tough journey to my goals, and helping me to develop personally and professionally. It’s no wonder that Disney movies still appeal to adults; we so often see ourselves in the challenges, emotions, and desires experienced by Disney characters. For me, that means:
I am Elsa, working on overcoming my shyness and insecurities.
I am Pocahontas, learning to trust my instincts and taking risks.
And I am Ariel, finding my voice and discovering my passion for writing.
Disney has also inspired me to put the same amount of creativity, passion, and detail into my own storytelling as they do with their movies, theme park attractions, and more. Whether it’s an article, a blog piece, or even an Instagram post, if I haven’t told you a great story or made you feel something, then what am I even doing?
I had started writing online on a non-professional basis—until I decided that my new years’ resolution for 2019 would be to get paid for something I write. I can proudly say that, after a number of my ideas were rejected, I was able to achieve just this when I pitched an idea for a Disney piece to Buzzfeed last summer—and it got published! Writing and pitching ideas still isn’t easy, but I’m keeping my head held high, and I can’t wait to see where my creative pursuits take me next!
Aside from my undying love for all things Disney, I also take time to make some popcorn and screen a classic film to study, appreciate, and enjoy. Being able to experience old films as a window to another time is strangely fascinating to me. I feel that I gain something from each film I watch, that I walk away having developed an understanding of people’s perspectives from that era. In short: if a movie is in black-and-white, it has my attention! When I’m not writing about Disney, I like to write about film, old Hollywood lore, and pop culture of the past and present.
